Description
A Tawny Eagle and an immature Bateleur having a stand-off. Earlier in the day a couple of Hyena came down to the waterhole and one of them was carrying a Hippo hoof, obviously from a meal from the night before. She had a drink and left the hoof behind.
Next, two immature Bateleur siblings came down to investigate but neither one of them were strong enough to carry the hoof off. Pretty soon a Tawny Eagle showed up and gave it a try, but there was no luck for any of the Raptors. Although the Tawny Eagle chased off the smaller sibling, the larger female stood her ground. Needless to say the hoof was too heavy for any of the three birds of prey that came by while we were there.
As it started to get late we had to leave in order to get back to our accommodations before the gate closed.
We came back the next morning but there was no sign of the Hippo hoof anywhere. so something during the night claimed it. This was one of my favorite top ten sightings in the Kruger National Park in South Africa and I will never forget it.
